If you meet these requirements yourself, then of course you can transport yourself with no problems.

TV licence for students in halls of residence.

“Do students need a tv licence in halls of residence?” and “Do students in halls need a tv licence?” Are the most frequently asked questions in search engines by students, so here is what you need to know.

According to the TV Licensing official website student halls still require a TV licence to watch TV in your room. This also applies for students with a house or flat they are sharing with separate tenancy agreement and properties with joint tenancy require a tv licence to cover the entire property.

You can buy a tv licence for what works out at 44p per day, which will grant you access to hundreds of channels and BBC iPlayer. However, if you plan to just use streaming services to watch on demand programmes and you are not going to be watching ITV, Channel 4, and the usual TV channels, you may not require a TV licence at all.

Does student loan cover halls of residence?

Your maintenance loan should cover for your accommodation, this will vary on a means tested basis. Students with parents that earn under £25,000 in total receive the most financial support within their maintenance loan, however in the National Student Money Survey it highlighted parents earning under £25,000 still provided financial support towards their child’s cost of living whilst studying.

The average student received £120.56 per month in support from parents on top of their maintenance loan to assist with accommodation and cost of living expenses. This means that having a conversation with your parents or guardians about what additional support they can provide before selecting your accommodation is highly recommended.

How to apply for student accommodation.

Applying for student accommodation should be an exciting time but it can be frustrating figuring out the exact process to go through to ensure you get the best digs and the best deal.

You can use the UCAS accommodation search, checkout the resources listed via the university you are attending specifically and also make arrangements directly with the accommodation providers.

All these options are completely fine, ensure that the prices are within your budget and consider your maintenance loan. If you can find the time to walk the property as almost all the accommodations provided will allow you to check out the property first in-person.

A final recommendation would be to check out the latest reviews of the property, reading through the latest student reviews. If you get the opportunity to talk with a student currently at the accommodation in question, take it!

In terms of where you will need to apply this is usually directly with the property provider, your university may also assist with this process we recommend emailing your university directly for additional support.

Can second year students live in halls?

Although student halls of residence are emphasised for new students you can stay in uni halls beyond your first year of university in almost all cases. If you are about to enter your second year of study and want to continue your tenancy within student halls, we advise contacting your property provider directly and your university for further support.

For further information checkout this UCAS resource for living in student halls in your second or third year.
