What Is A Long Wheel Base Van?

So, what is a LWB van exactly? Long wheel base vans are simply vans equipped to move more as they have a longer base between the front and rear wheels, some popular models include the long wheel base Transit van and long wheelbase Mercedes sprinter although most vans on the road have a LWB and XLWB option. They are essentially a long van, the biggest of which is known as a jumbo van - the XLWB combined with a higher roof provides the largest load capacity panel van on the road to date.

A long wheel based van is simply for people with lots of stuff to move. There are also medium wheel base vans (MWB) for people that want a middle ground solution and small wheel base vans (SWB) for a nimbler approach better for driving in built up areas but with a compromise to storage capacity.

Can I Drive A Long Wheel Base Van?

You can drive a long wheelbase van on a standard UK driving licence also known as a category B driving licence. One of the key considerations of any long wheelbase van is that although you do have the extra room in the back the van does weight more in total, so make sure when loading that you don’t exceed your category B maximum loading licence limit of 3.5 tonne, this also applies for anyone looking at any large or big van hire.

How Long Is A Long Wheel Base Van?

The exact dimensions and sizes of a long wheel base van will differ depending on the manufacturer of the vehicle alongside the make and model. However, to give you an idea we can look at how long is a long wheel base Transit van and how long is a Mercedes Sprinter van, to give you a rough idea of what you will be working with.
